(which amusingly doesn't have any update notes for 1.5.)

Wrong answer. You are supposed to say "I have software foo which requires PNG 1.5" or at minimum can even use 1.5.

1.5 is incompatible with 1.2 so if I update to 1.5 all of our existing software (as far as I've checked which was several) will need patching to use either 1.5 or 1.2 which is the easy patch. Think, if the upstream writers haven't updated to 1.5 why do you think you can or should? I decided not to force maintainers to patch just to continue using the 1.2 until there was a case that required it.

I am subscribed to the PNG mailing list so am fully aware of update notifications.

Since this is a request from you Dago and I see that you're building this new version yourself I'm transferring this bug to you. I only updated this as a courtesy rebuild to Maciej.

There's a new package, CSWlibpng15-15, which is based on source 1.5.13. I'm closing this bug since this package (CSWlibpng3) is based on 1.2.50 which is incompatible with the newer source (as said in the comments to this bug).

CSWlibpng3 could be removed from the catalog since nothing specifies it as a dependency any longer.
